The COGR’s COVID-19 Research Impact Study, conducted through a series of Baseline and Pulse Surveys between May and July 2020, assessed the ongoing effects of the pandemic on research operations at universities, academic medical centers, and independent research institutes. The data reveal a significant shift toward reopening on-campus research activities, with the proportion of institutions operating mostly remotely declining notably between Pulse 1 and Pulse 2. Institutions have widely incorporated COVID-19 testing and contact tracing into their reopening strategies, demonstrating adaptive measures to maintain safety and continuity in research.
Despite these adaptations, the study indicates substantial financial challenges, as many institutions have implemented or are considering furloughs, layoffs, and salary adjustments for research staff. Nevertheless, a majority of respondents express optimism about fulfilling research objectives as these reopening efforts progress, though uncertainty remains due to fluctuating COVID-19 case rates in various regions. The survey’s findings provide an evolving snapshot of institutions’ resilience and strategic response to unprecedented disruptions, while highlighting the financial and operational uncertainties that persist as the situation develops.
